Summary:

Opioid dependence can be caused by the use of prescription opioids obtained legally or illegally, or by the use of illicit opioids, such as heroin. It continues to be a growing problem in the United States, with opioid-related deaths occurring daily. Often, patients who discontinue opioid use require treatment to prevent relapse. Buprenorphine is a partial mu-opioid agonist that is used for the treatment of patients with opioid dependence. It is available as a sublingual tablet, sublingual or buccal soluble film strip, and implant, and is used in formulations with or without naloxone. This module will review the safety and efficacy of each of the formulations, as well as the role of buprenorphine in the treatment of opioid dependence.

Objectives:

The goal of this buprenorphine continuing education program is to update healthcare professionals with information about opioid dependence and the therapeutic use of buprenorphine to treat the condition. Pharmacology, dosage and administration, regulations, and use in special populations will be discussed. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Describe the key differences among the three FDA-approved drugs for the treatment of opioid dependence
  • Explain the regulations that control prescribing and dispensing of methadone and buprenorphine for the treatment of opioid dependence
  • Summarize how buprenorphine is dosed and administered for the treatment of opioid dependence
