Acne vulgaris is one of the top three common skin disorders in the Western Hemisphere. Although acne vulgaris is the most common skin disease associated with adolescence, affecting approximately 85% of teenagers, its prevalence continues into adulthood, thus challenging the perception that acne is a self-limiting disease of adolescence. There is a heightened awareness to physical appearance in today’s society, so there are notable emotional and psychological implications associated with individuals suffering from acne, namely lowered self-esteem and confidence. Current treatment options include regimens consisting of topical and/or systemic medications.

The goal of this continuing education program is to review and discuss information specific to the management of acne vulgaris. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Review the pathogenesis and epidemiology of acne vulgaris
  • Choose an appropriate treatment regimen for a patient with acne
  • Discuss pertinent counseling points and monitoring parameters to give to patients that will increase adherence and mitigate adverse effects
