Bacterial gastroenteritis can cause significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. Typical manifestations include symptoms of vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort. Adequate fluid and electrolyte replacement is the cornerstone of therapy for diarrheal illnesses. Due to the mild and self-limited nature of most cases, antibiotic therapy is not commonly indicated. However, there are some cases in which antibiotics are indicated. Improper management of acute diarrheal illnesses can lead to a prolonged and complicated course. Pharmacists can play a key role in treating and educating patients about monitoring parameters and management strategies that would help alleviate symptoms of bacterial gastroenteritis.

The goal of this continuing education program is to provide pharmacists with evidence-based information on bacterial gastroenteritis, including its epidemiology, etiology, clinical presentation, treatment, and prevention strategies. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Discuss the epidemiology of bacterial gastroenteritis
  • Describe the etiologies and clinical presentation of bacterial gastroenteritis
  • Recommend prevention and treatment strategies for bacterial gastroenteritis
