Atopic dermatitis manifests as a chronic, pruritic inflammation of the skin. The condition is usually associated with elevated immunoglobulin E levels and family history. The disease is characterized by red and itchy dry skin. Clinical manifestations of atopic dermatitis vary with age and target different areas of the body. Risk factors associated with the disease include family history and filaggrin gene expression (the gene which codes for a large protein known as profilaggrin, which makes up the outermost layer of skin or epidermis). Goals of therapy are to minimize the number of exacerbations of the disease and reduce the duration and degree of each flare. Moisturizers, or more specifically emollients, are crucial for managing the symptoms of the disease to help maintain hydration in the epidermis, leading to an enhanced skin appearance and itch reduction. Various other pharmacological agents also may be used.
The goal of this atopic dermatitis continuing education module is to provide healthcare professionals with information about the latest updated management options for atopic dermatitis. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
- Describe the pathophysiology, etiology, precipitating factors, and clinical signs and symptoms related to the presentation of atopic dermatitis
- Discuss clinical complications and treatment goals for the disease
- Identify nonpharmacologic and pharmacologic treatment modalities for the management of atopic dermatitis
- Demonstrate an understanding of appropriate monitoring parameters to reach treatment goals
