Thyroid disorder may lead to serious medical conditions if not managed. Hyperthyroidism is usually caused by Graves disease, toxic multinodular goiter, toxic adenoma, thyroiditis, and concurrent drugs. These factors cause the overactive thyroid gland to produce an increased level of triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4). Current management of the condition and/or its symptoms includes beta-adrenergic receptor blockers, thionamides (anti-thyroid drugs), radioactive iodine, and thyroidectomy. Managing thyrotoxic crisis (a thyroid storm), a life-threating emergency of hyperthyroidism state, requires a supportive therapy in conjunction with cocktail of medications including beta-blockers, anti-thyroid medications, and corticosteroids. Complementary and alternative therapies have been used, but have yet to be proven worthy. All therapies require appropriate monitoring and adherence to see results.
The goal of this hyperthyroidism continuing education program is to provide healthcare professionals with information about the updated management of hyperthyroidism. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
- Describe the pathophysiology, etiology, clinical signs and symptoms, and clinical parameters of hyperthyroidism
- Review the pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic treatments of hyperthyroidism
