Medication error safety is an issue of ongoing importance and concern in the healthcare field. Despite significant attention, the estimated cost of morbidity and mortality associated with medication errors is $21 billion. This module has been designed to provide sample cases of medication errors for the healthcare team to review and apply skills to. It is recommended that prior to taking this course, the attendee first complete a more in-depth course on medication errors. By maintaining constant vigilance, honing skills related to recognizing and reporting medication errors, and developing strategies to address deficiencies in the healthcare delivery system, it is possible to make a significant impact on this epidemic.
The goal of this webinar is to engage members of the inter-professional healthcare team in detecting, reporting, and preventing medication errors. By participating in an active discussion of various types of errors from different healthcare settings, participants will be able to better understand how their roles interplay in the medication use process and gain foresight into where and how errors may occur. Upon completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Briefly review and discuss the definition of a medication error
- Review resources for reporting medication errors
- Demonstrate medication error identification and reporting skills
- Discuss methods for improved prevention, identification and reporting of medication errors within the team setting
