Pharmacy technicians applying for license renewals in Texas after January 1, 2015, must report 1 contact hour of continuing education related to Texas Pharmacy Laws or Regulations. Amendments to the Texas Board of Pharmacy Rules were adopted in 2014 that modify definitions about pharmacy practice, simplify patient-counseling requirements, redefine pharmacy-related terminology, clarify operational standards for community pharmacies, and update pharmacy record-keeping requirements. The amendments do not fundamentally change the roles or responsibilities of pharmacy technicians who practice in the community setting; rather they acknowledge communication preferences and systems in the 21st century that affect the way pharmacists practice. Pharmacy technicians should be able to identify practice implications and legal ramifications of these recent amendments and apply the new rules to patient-centered care in community practice.
This goal of this pharmacy continuing education module will be to review recent updates to the Texas Board of Pharmacy Rules (TxBOPR), related to community pharmacy practice, to ensure that pharmacy technicians in Texas understand the laws and regulations encompassing their profession and the operation of pharmacies in which they work; specifically, duties they can perform under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist and those only a pharmacist may perform. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
- List recent changes to the TxBOPR
- Explain how the recent changes impact practice
- Identify the need to review and incorporate this updated information into the pharmacist’s knowledge base
