Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease caused by the spirochete Treponema pallidum. The organism may be acquired via sexual contact, blood transfusion, or during delivery from the mother to the fetus. If left untreated, the infection progresses through four distinct stages: primary, secondary, latent, and tertiary. The aim of drug therapy is to completely eradicate T. pallidum from the body. The antibiotic of choice is penicillin, and it is the only recommended antibiotic for syphilis during pregnancy, neurosyphilis, and congenital syphilis.
The goal of this syphilis continuing education program is to provide pharmacy technicians with information about syphilis, its presentation and treatment. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
- Describe the stages of syphilis, their clinical presentation, and prevention of the infection
- Discuss the Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction and its management
- Discuss at least two regimens for adults and two regimens for infants used in the treatment of syphilis
