Pneumocystis jiroveci pneumonia is a common opportunistic infection in people with HIV. Formerly known as Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, it is still commonly abbreviated as PCP. Before the 1980s, there were less than 100 cases of PCP reported annually in the United States; by the end of that decade, well over 100,000 cases of PCP were reported. The occurrence of PCP has significantly decreased with the use of highly active anti-retroviral therapy (ART) and prophylaxis. Despite this, PCP still remains the most frequent opportunistic lung infection in patients with HIV. If PCP is suspected, empirical treatment should begin immediately as mortality is almost 100% if untreated.
The goal of this course is to educate pharmacists, physicians, and health educators about the clinical presentation, extrapulmonary manifestations, and treatment/prophylaxis of PCP. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
- Describe some signs and symptoms of PCP infection in a patient with HIV
- Identify the most commonly prescribed medication for the treatment of PCP infection and the recommended dose
- List at least 2 alternative drug regimens used for treating PCP
