One of the most common causes of central nervous system disease in AIDS is toxoplasmosis. When a patient with AIDS has toxoplasmosis involving the brain, it is usually a late manifestation of the AIDS disease process. Although toxoplasmosis lesions may be found anywhere in the brain, they are rare in the spinal cord. Treating CNS toxoplasmosis requires clinical judgment and good knowledge about the patient’s medical status. Primary empiric therapy is followed by long-term highly active antiretroviral therapy, often continued until the CD4 count is more than 200 cells/uL.
The goal of this toxoplasmosis continuing education program is to provide pharmacists, pharmacy techs, and physicians with adequate information about toxoplasmosis, including its epidemiology, presentation and management of infection. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
- Describe Toxoplasma gondii infection, its epidemiology and clinical presentation
- Discuss populations at risk for toxoplasmosis and the means of identifying the infection
- List at least 2 drug regimens used to treat toxoplasmosis
