One of the most agonizing types of headache is the cluster headache. Cluster headache is primarily a neurovascular disorder. It typically presents with intense, strictly one-sided retro-orbital or periorbital headache that is often accompanied by obvious craniofacial cholinergic symptoms. The majority of cluster headaches have a short duration, which ranges from five to 180 minutes. In some cases, the headaches occur every day; in others they may occur six to eight times a day. It is this regularity that is the key to diagnosis. Once an organic pathology has been ruled out, the treatment of cluster headache is usually drug therapy. For selected patients with intractable headaches, a variety of surgical procedures may help reduce or eliminate cluster headaches.
The goal of this continuing education program is to provide pharmacists and physicians with information about cluster headaches, their presentation, and treatment. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
- Describe the epidemiology and risk factors for cluster headaches
- Discuss at least three distinct clinical features of cluster headaches
- List three abortive and three prophylactic agents used to treat cluster headaches
