Summary:

The Ebola virus is one of at least 30 known viruses that can cause acute hemorrhagic fever. Although the viruses known to cause viral hemorrhagic fever have a diverse structural and genetic background, they all have a distinct lipid envelope, and are RNA viruses. The majority of these viral infections are highly lethal and no specific treatments are available. The Ebola virus has no racial or sex predilection; no one is immune from this infection. The treatment of Ebola virus infection rests on supportive therapy. This includes aggressive fluid hydration, replacement of electrolytes and nutrition. The patient must be isolated, and universal precautions must be practiced. All body fluids should be handled with extreme care. Patients who die should be buried as quickly as possible with minimal body contact.

Objectives:

The goal of this Ebola virus continuing education program is to provide pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, physicians, laboratory professionals, and EMTs and paramedics with accurate information about the Ebola virus, including its epidemiology, presentation and treatment. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Describe the epidemiology, presentation and diagnosis of Ebola virus infection
  • Discuss the management of patients with viral hemorrhagic fever caused by the Ebola virus
  • List the role of passive immunity and vaccination for treatment of Ebola virus infection
