Creatine, whey powder, branched chain amino acid capsules, pre-workout drink mix booster … your consultation table is covered in products brought in by an athlete who wonders whether he needs supplements to improve his performance. What do you tell him? Without a thorough understanding of the process by which energy is produced by the body and the nutrients required to fuel those systems, it’s difficult to separate the hype from fact when it comes to diets for athletes and use of dietary supplements. All athletes, whether amateur or elite, want a best performance. For the elite athlete, it can be the difference between success and failure. For the amateur or “weekend warrior” it can mean feeling good and recovering quickly after exercise or an event. This course provides the information about sports nutrition that is necessary to educate any athlete to improve performance and recover quickly while avoiding harmful behaviors.

Objectives:

The goal of this sports nutrition practice continuing education course is to provide a comprehensive review of the components of evidence-based sports nutrition practice, essential in helping athletes implement safe and effective nutrition interventions to support optimal performance and overall health. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Discuss how intensity, duration, and fitness level influence the type of fuel used by the muscles for energy
  • Explain the relationship of carbohydrate intake and endurance training to performance
  • Plan the following for an athlete: a pre-exercise meal, a training diet, a carbohydrate-loading diet, and intake during and after competition
  • Discuss the benefits of fat use during exercise, and the pros and cons of a fat-loading diet
  • State the protein requirements for athletes and explain why goals may be different for athletes
  • List three reasons why amino acid supplements are not necessary to increase performance
  • Choose appropriate fluid replacement to prevent dehydration and maximize performance
  • Explain the role of exercise for weight control, body composition, energy metabolism, and in eating disorders
  • Explain which ergogenic aids are beneficial and which are worthless
  • Discuss some nutrition beliefs and approaches that may constitute quackery
  • Design a training diet that meets the calorie, carbohydrate, protein and fat requirements of an athlete based on age, sex, weight, height, training goals, and sport
  • Illustrate how relative energy efficiency in sport (RED-S) and the female athlete triad (FAT) compromise athletic performance and what health consequences can result from them.
  • Evaluate current sports nutrition research in preparation for the Commission on Dietetic Registration Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD) exam
