Summary:

Lipedema is an often overlooked disease that primarily affects women. It is characterized by a gradual and chronic progressive symmetrical accumulation of fat in the subcutaneous tissue, typically seen in the buttocks and lower extremities. 

Objectives:

The goal of this lipedema educational program is to provide physical therapists with an overview of lipedema, including etiology, pathophysiology, risk factors, clinical manifestations, treatment options, and differential diagnosis with lymphedema. 
 
The content in this course is applicable to physical therapy professionals. After taking this course, you should be able to:
  • Describe the etiology, pathophysiology, and risk factors of lipedema.
  • Identify the most common signs and symptoms of lipedema.
  • Differentiate between lipedema and other causes of fat or fluid accumulation.
  • Summarize current treatment strategies for lipedema.
