Summary:

Confused, insecure, unsure — many healthcare practitioners feel this way when they must make difficult decisions about their patients’ care. Ethical decision making is sometimes a daunting reality, one that requires an understanding of how to apply moral and ethical principles in practical and serious situations. Basic models of ethical approaches exist, yet curricula for the allied health professions typically do not include them as part of a healthcare-based education. Therefore, healthcare practitioners may not know about these ethical models and how they can be used to resolve bioethical dilemmas in a systematic and purposeful manner. This course covers the four principles of bioethics, as well as models that can serve as tools when justifying difficult decisions.

Objectives:

The goal of this ethics and decision-making continuing education program is to provide dietitians, pharmacists, health educators, occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech-language pathologists, and radiologic technologists with information on moral and ethical decision making. After studying the information presented here, you will be better able to:
  • Define the concept of moral or ethical decision making
  • Explain the theory of moral judgment development, including its stages and criticisms thereof, and identify which stage of moral judgment development a practitioner is exhibiting based on a response to an ethical dilemma
  • Describe the four principles of bioethical decision making and, given a hypothetical scenario, identify what is at stake for each principle
  • Discuss how critical thinking and dilemma discussion can affect moral development
