Summary:

A diagnosis of cancer can be a life-changing, highly debilitating event severe enough to impact activities of daily living and quality of life. Strategic cancer principles and treatments are the foundation of appropriate medication use, adverse effect management, and curative outcomes. The goal of this continuing education program is to update healthcare professionals’ knowledge regarding the role of the cell life cycle in drug selection and treatment, with minimal toxicity, for various cancer types.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education program is to offer healthcare providers information and an understanding regarding the cancer cell life cycle, principles of chemotherapy, anticancer drugs, and adverse effects in the treatment and care of patients receiving chemotherapy. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Discuss the role the cancer cell life cycle plays in the selection of antineoplastic agents to strategically treat cancer 
  • Describe the chemotherapy drug classifications and mechanisms of action pertaining to alkylating agents, antimetabolites, anthracyclines, antitumor cytotoxic antibiotics, mitotic inhibitors, plant vinca alkaloids and anti-microtubule/taxanes, targeted therapies, and miscellaneous antineoplastic agents in the treatment of cancer
  • List the different adverse effects of and management techniques for anticancer drugs
