In the U.S., more people are infected with human papillomavirus (HPV) than any other sexually transmitted infection. About 79 million Americans are infected, with 14 million new infections annually. Most sexually active people will become infected during their lifetimes. Vaccinations at an early age, before sexual debut, offer protection from common low- and high-risk types of HPV. This module provides nurses and other members of the healthcare team with information about HPV vaccines to prevent cervical and other cancers, as well as HPV-related diseases.

The goal of this continuing education program is to provide healthcare professionals with information about human papillomavirus vaccines to prevent cervical and other cancers, as well as HPV-related diseases. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Describe the manifestations of HPV infection in males and females
  • Discuss genital types of HPV infection and their sequelae
  • Explain the criteria for administering HPV vaccines
  • Discuss education and support resources for patients and parents/guardians about HPV vaccination
