Summary:

Modern-day pharmacy practice has a historical basis in compounding, and it falls under the purview of pharmacists and other trained compounders. While the technology and chemical entities have become increasingly more sophisticated, the principle remains the same as hundreds of years ago. Adhering to stringent regulations governing the pharmaceutical laboratory is key to achieving consistent and effective drug delivery; however, even minor lapses in standards for compounding can result in devastating consequences. Pharmacists must be vigilant and strictly adhere to the regulations for compounding to ensure their extemporaneous preparations are safe.

Objectives:

The goal of this pharmacy compounding continuing education program is to address national regulations governing the manufacture and sale of compounded medications as well as explore some of the state-specific requirements mandated for continuing education for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. After studying the information here, you will be able to:
  • Identify some states that have initial or renewal educational requirements specific to compounding
  • Review standardized definitions of terms relevant to pharmaceutical compounding
  • Review requirements for sterile and nonsterile compounding in the United States Pharmacopeia related to facilities, equipment, and training
