The North Carolina Medical Board Requirements

CE - Physicians: 60 Hours of Category 1 CME hours over a three-year period. Physicians report completed CME to the Board. As of August 1, 2012, physicians are not required to report any Category 2 CME. Licenses must be renewed every year on the physician's birthday but the CME cycle renews on the physician's birthday of the last year of the cycle.

  • Three (3) hours of eligible CME on controlled substance prescribing practices during each three year cycle, beginning July 1, 2017, 21 NCAC 32R .0101. For FAQs about this new requirement, click here.
 
CE - Physician Assistants: 50 hours of continuing medical education (CME) every two years. The CME shall be recognized by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) as Category I CME.  A physician assistant shall provide CME documentation for inspection by the board or its agent upon request. The two-year period shall begin on the physician assistant's first birthday following initial licensure.
