Summary:
This program helps to dispel the myths surrounding breast cancer development and screening for the disease. Early detection improves survival; however, recommendations for breast cancer screening have been inconsistent. In 2009, the U.S. Preventative Task Force issued recommendations for breast cancer screening that were different from the American Cancer Society’s recommendations for yearly mammography for women over age 40. In 2011, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists echoed the advice of the American Cancer Society. Currently, no screening procedure is 100% accurate, and lifestyle factors, including age, pre- or post-menstrual status, use of hormone replacement therapy and alcohol consumption, should play a role in determining when and how often screening should be conducted.
Objectives:
The goal of this program is to help healthcare professionals identify current thinking on breast cancer screening and to understand the controversies surrounding screening. After attending this webinar, participants will be able to —
- Increase their knowledge and understanding of cancer and breast anatomy
- Define current breast cancer screening recommendations and the controversy surrounding these recommendations
