Summary:
The diagnosis of breast cancer results in many psychosocial issues. Life changes in all aspects, and life after a cancer diagnosis is frightful, finite and always uncertain. Patients can gain empowerment through education of treatment options, joining a support group, physical activity, relaxation techniques, and being a little bit selfish to take time to take care of themselves. Healthcare providers can help patients by managing symptoms of disease, making appropriate referrals, and encourage positive coping strategies. After treatment, patients need to learn to heal and live life to the fullest.
Objectives:
The goal of this program is to provide an understanding of the myriad of emotional stages a woman experiences when dealing with a breast cancer diagnosis. Upon completion of this session, attendees will know the following —
- Define four potential types of psychological issues experienced by clients with cancer
- List two possible factors that may contribute to the development of psychological issues
- Describe two interventions that might be used with the client experiencing psychological issues
- Discuss two interventions that might be used with family members of the client experiencing psychological
