Summary:

Research has shown that multidisciplinary teamwork (sometimes referred to as cross-professional collaboration) proves to be more effective than care delivered through individual professional contributions. The team approach to patient care has many advantages, including better planning, more effective clinical services, services that are more responsive and patient focused, and reduced duplication and fragmentation of care. Healthcare professionals tend to be more satisfied in their roles when they engage in teamwork. This may be at least partly due to the fact that learning occurs through the exposure of team members to the skills of others from different disciplines. Stress levels of staff may be reduced, resulting in improved job satisfaction, higher motivation and better mental health. Better outcomes and a higher level of patient satisfaction with healthcare delivery result as well.

Objectives:

The goal of this program is to enhance social workers’ abilities to work with interdisciplinary teams. After you study the information presented here, you will be able to —
  1. List three advantages of the team approach to patient care.
  2. Describe nine characteristics or roles that team members can exhibit that enhance the functioning of the team.
  3. Describe the four dimensions of team self-management associated with team success.
