Summary:

In 2007, 37.9 million Americans, or 12.6% of the population, were over 65. By 2020, it’s projected that 55 million people will be older than 65. Americans are also living longer. At the beginning of the 20th century, life expectancy was 47 years; by 2007, it had increased to an all-time high of 77.9 years (80.4 years for women, 75.3 years for men). The increased number of elderly has been accompanied by an increase in elder abuse. In 2000, Adult Protective Services received 472,813 reports of elder and vulnerable adult abuse. In 2004, the agency received a total of 565,747 reports of elder/adult abuse, a 19.7% increase from the 2000 survey.Elder self-neglect and abuse are linked to an increased risk of death. Abused elders were twice as likely to die prematurely from all causes, and almost four times as likely to die prematurely from heart disease.
