Summary:
Clinical, or major, depression is a chronic disease worldwide. The World Health Organization predicts that, as already is the case in the United States, unipolar depression (without mania or hypomania) will be surpassed only by heart disease as the leading cause of disability and premature death in all developed countries by 2020. Besides causing disability and loss of function, depression has a 15% mortality rate, primarily from suicide. Depression’s frequent companion, anxiety, is the most prevalent mental disorder, occurring in 15% of the population each year. These two mental health conditions pose a key concern for primary care providers, including social workers. Undiagnosed and undertreated, they account for increased healthcare spending and repeated office visits, as well as for associated physical complaints. This continuing education program will focus on unipolar depression, particularly screening and diagnosis.
Objectives:
The purpose of this module is to provide social workers with up-to-date information on depression and anxiety, particularly screening, diagnosis, treatment, and compliance concerns. After studying the information presented here you will be able to —
