Summary:

A culturally savvy healthcare worker must be able to interpret the husband’s dominance of the assessment interview and the wife’s acquiescence in the light of their cultural programming and not make assumptions based upon U.S. majority culture. When caring for women, it is particularly important to be sensitive to different culturally prescribed roles for men and women and for culturally prescribed roles in arriving at medical decisions. The goal of this program is to raise social workers’ awareness and promote understanding of the impact of culture on women’s health beliefs and practices, as well as their responses to current approaches to care.

The goal of this program is to raise social workers' awareness and promote understanding of the impact of culture on women’s health beliefs and practices, and their responses to current approaches to care. After you study the information presented here, you will be able to —

I think cultural competence is too often overlooked as an important consideration in healthcare. This course was excellent and touched on many important areas that need to be factored into everyday assessments and important healthcare decisions. Some very good points about how to discuss difficult topics.
