Summary:

One of the key psychosocial needs of patients with cancer is hope. Honest disclosure about diagnosis and prognosis must be balanced by realistic hope. Because social workers are around their patients day and night — at times when they are newly diagnosed, undergoing primary treatment, or needing special care — their behaviors can be important in inspiring and strengthening hope. Strategies for inspiring hope can include active listening, touch, presence, and helping patients achieve good symptom control.

Objectives:

The goal of this program is to enhance the expertise, effectiveness and confidence of social work practitioners who are working with oncology patients in any setting. After you study the information presented here, you will be able to —
  1. Discuss the psychological distress sometimes experienced by patients diagnosed with cancer.
  2. Describe typical information needs of cancer patients and how providing information can help patients cope.
  3. List at least three interventions and communication skills helpful in caring for patients with cancer.
