Summary:

According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2006 statistics, the American population continues to grow in its diversity while shifting in its ethnic makeup. Most recent results indicate that Caucasians constitute 73.9% of the population; Hispanics 14.8%; African-Americans 12.4%; Asians 4.4%; American Indians and Alaskan Natives 0.8%; and Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders 0.1%. This data is confounded by the fact that 2.0 % of individuals report belonging to two or more races, while another 6.3% have indicated belonging to some “other” race. There is much diversity among members of each group, and each group maintains its own cultural values, beliefs and customs. Consequently, communicating with patients from diverse backgrounds challenges social workers to gain the appropriate cultural knowledge and skills to address the specific needs of their patients.

Objectives:

The goal of this program is to help social workers develop an individualized plan for becoming culturally competent. After you study this information, you will be able to —
  1. Define cultural competence.
  2. Identify barriers that inhibit the provision of culturally competent social work care.
  3. Describe the components of a personal action plan for becoming culturally competent.

Good beginners course or introduction to cultural competency. Good start for self-assessment of where I am as a clinician in my cultural competency skills.
