Summary:

The use of heroin is “in” among certain groups. A fashionable thing to do in the late 1990s, some called it “heroin chic." Heroin users move in and out of a variety of inpatient and outpatient settings where social workers care for patients from diverse social and economic situations. Social workers in practice settings ranging from the ED to physicians’ offices are in pivotal positions to identify the signs and symptoms associated with heroin abuse or dependence in their patients and to guide them to treatment.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education program is to help social workers identify and care for patients who are heroin users. After you study the information presented here, you will be able to —
  • Describe three behaviors exhibited by patients who experience physical and psychological dependence on heroin.
  • List signs and symptoms manifested by patients with heroin overdose and with heroin withdrawal.
  • Identify two treatment modalities each for heroin dependency, overdose and withdrawal.
