Summary:

The one thing you can count on when you work in today’s fast-paced healthcare setting is that it’s full of surprises. Nothing is simple. Whether you work in a hospital, a long-term care facility, the community, or home care, you’re expected to take on more responsibility and make more independent decisions. Almost every day, you have to learn something new or adapt to some change. To survive and thrive in today’s (and tomorrow’s) workplace, you need highly developed abilities, especially critical thinking skills. You have to know how to clearly and quickly focus your thinking to get the results you need — whether it’s helping patients achieve outcomes, resolving a conflict with a coworker, or mastering that new computer.

Objectives:

The goal of this program is to help social workers improve their ability to think critically. After you study the information presented here, you will be able to —
  1. Describe critical thinking in the context of your practice.
  2. Identify what the research says about the characteristics and skills that demonstrate critical thinking.
  3. Use strategies to improve your ability to think critically.
