Summary:

In 2009, approximately 423,773 children were placed in foster care in the United States. Placement into the foster care system occurs when children are removed from their biological parent(s) or lawful guardian(s) due to being at risk of or endangered by physical or psychological harm. In the United States, most children enter foster care because of the form of abuse defined as neglect. The second and third leading forms of abuse are, respectively, physical abuse and sexual abuse.

Objectives:

The goal of this program is to provide social workers with information about child abuse, Child Protective Services and placement of children in foster care. After completing this program, you will be able to —
  • Discuss the prevalence of children entering the U.S. foster care system.
  • List the reasons for placement in the foster care system.
  • Identify the different categories and signs of child abuse.
