Summary:
Behind every RT who changed the world is an inspirational respiratory therapy instructor. As the gatekeepers of respiratory therapy practice, faculty members have a rich history of providing knowledge, teaching essential skills, and inspiring students to set high standards for patient care. Today’s faculty face unparalleled challenges as they prepare students for an increasingly complex therapist role. Integrating new knowledge into the curriculum, using technology to augment learning, and preparing future RTs as life-long learners offer educators opportunities to influence the future of our profession. This module will discuss the innovative teaching strategies RT educators are using to meet these challenges. It will also discuss the ways in which faculty are meeting the learning needs of a diverse student population, the forces driving changes in the field of respiratory therapy, and the rewards and challenges of becoming a respiratory therapy educator.
Objectives:
The goal of this program is to provide respiratory therapists (RTs) with information about changes in education that are influencing how today’s students are being prepared for practice. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to —
- Describe four innovative teaching strategies that RT educators use to meet the learning needs of diverse groups of students.
- Identify trends in healthcare and education that challenge RT educators to prepare students for a changing RRT role.
- Discuss the rewards and challenges of being a respiratory therapy faculty member.
