Summary:

Heart disease, not breast cancer, is the leading cause of death in post-menopausal women and lifestyle changes are the first line of defense in preventing ischemic heart disease. A diet rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, fish and high-fiber foods is recommended to keep weight in check as well as to provide nutrients needed for heart health. In addition, reducing sodium, saturated fat and cholesterol have been shown to help prevent cardiovascular diseases. Results of research using supplements to prevent heart disease have been disappointing, but consuming foods rich in antioxidants, especially vitamin E and the B-vitamin folic acid, are recommended. Fatty fish consumption (two fish meals per week) is also recommended; for those who do not eat fish, fish oil supplements containing both EPA and DHA is an acceptable alternative.
