Summary:

Gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD affects about 7 million individuals in the U.S., and the incidence increases with advancing age. Reflux occurs when the competence of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) is reduced, and food and fluids in the stomach get refluxed or flow back into the esophagus. Symptoms range from occasional heartburn to severe erosion of the lining of the esophagus. Many people with GERD self-diagnosis the condition and treat the problem with over-the-counter medications, but obtaining a definitive diagnosis and targeted treatment is important to prevent serious complications. The GERD Impact Scale is a useful diagnostic tool for physicians and relevant for both the recently diagnosed and the chronic GERD patient. Drug therapies with antacids and/or histamine 2 blockers or proton pump inhibitors are also used when lifestyle changes fail to reduce symptoms.

Objectives:

The goal of this program is to update dietitians’ and healthcare professionals’ knowledge of care of the patient with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). After you study the information presented here, you will be able to —
  • List at least two common symptoms and causes of GERD.
  • Identify at least two differences in GERD in infancy and adulthood.
  • Identify diet, lifestyle, drug, and surgical interventions for GERD.
