Summary:
The OT practice framework identifies values, beliefs and spirituality as client factors, acknowledging their key influence in motivating clients to engage in occupations and to live a meaningful life. Because OTs strive to provide care that is client centered, this requires awareness of and openness to clients’ cultural and spiritual beliefs and customs. Islam is the second largest and fastest growing religion in the world. Although Islam is often associated with the Middle East, a large number of Muslims in the United States are African-American and Asian. The goal of this program is to update healthcare professionals' knowledge of providing culturally competent care to patients who are Muslim.
Objectives:
The goal of this program is to update healthcare professionals’ knowledge of providing culturally competent care to a patient who is Muslim. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to —
- Identify two significant Islamic health–related practices or beliefs.
- Identify three communication strategies useful when caring for patients who are Muslim.
- Describe caregiving actions that are consistent with Islamic practices and beliefs.
