Summary:
Americans spend more than $117 billion every year to treat obesity-related conditions and to pay for avoidable healthcare expenses, such as knee replacements from wear, medications for Type 2 diabetes, and other complications less frequently seen in non-obese people. Obesity brings with it many occupational complications as well as health concerns. The goal of this program is to provide OTs with an overview of the care of patients who have had bariatric surgery; differentiate between surgical options available for severely obese individuals; and Identify psychosocial and quality-of-life issues that affect patients both before and after bariatric surgery.
