Summary:
Anxiety disorders are among the most common mental health diagnoses, affecting over 13% of Americans aged 18 to 54, and persisting throughout patients’ life spans. Recurrent episodes of severe anxiety can cause people to avoid everyday places, interactions and activities, resulting in seriously decreased occupational performance. Significant levels of anxiety can impede participation in treatment in hospital, school, residential, and community settings. By understanding the presentation of, causes of and interventions for common anxiety disorders, OTs can participate in identification and referral for full evaluation, and work with other team members in planning and implementing effective interventions.
Objectives:
The goal of this program is to update OTs’ clinical knowledge about the most common types of anxiety disorders so that they may identify, evaluate, and treat anxiety. After you study the information presented here, you will be able to —
- Describe the common symptoms and treatments of five anxiety disorders.
- Ask two important questions when evaluating clients for anxiety disorders
- Develop an intervention plan following the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework.
