Summary:

This course highlights the unique stressors and lack of protective mechanisms experienced by mothers who are parenting children with challenging behaviors such as autism spectrum disorders, ADHD and other childhood-related disabilities. Incorporation of an occupational profile as part of the evaluation and intervention tools can be effective in evaluating and helping mothers whose children have extraordinary needs. Identifying the needs of mothers of children with challenging behavior is essential to the progress of successful treatment. The goal of this two-part course is to provide practitioners with information about the use of an occupational profile questionnaire as a critical element in the evaluation and intervention process for pediatric occupational therapy. This course also provides the new Occupational Therapy Practice Framework to support normalizing routines, habits and rituals for mothers of hard-to-parent children.

Objectives:

The goal of this program is to explain why an occupational therapy evaluation and intervention should include the occupations embedded in the role of mother, when treating pediatric clients with mental health disorders. After you study the information presented here, you will be able to —
  • Identify why addressing the needs of mothers is essential to the progress of children in treatment.
  • Use the Occupational Profile as a critical element in the evaluation and intervention process for pediatric occupational therapy.
  • Apply the new Occupational Therapy Practice Framework to support greater normalizing routines, habits, and rituals for mothers of hard-to-parent children.

Unique concept that is very important to OT. Could have been more detailed for intervention.
