Objectives:

The purpose of this course is to provide an overview of the concepts of cancer and a basic foundation in the oncology care of adult patients receiving chemotherapy. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to —
  • Discuss three myths about cancer.
  • Identify two phases of cancer development.
  • List the three major forms of cancer treatment and whether their effects are local or systemic.
  • Define adjuvant chemotherapy.
  • Describe the rationale for combination chemotherapy and the schedule of administration requiring repeated administration of the drugs.
  • Identify three guidelines for the administering chemotherapy IV.
  • Describe a patient situation in which combination chemotherapy is being administered and list one point each for patient education specific to mucositis, alopecia and peripheral neurotoxicity.
  • Discuss two interventions each for the patient experiencing neutropenia and thrombocytopenia.
  • Identify mechanisms of nausea and vomiting related to physiological causes and anticipatory anxiety.

Educational Gap: Health professionals are not familiar with the use and side effects of chemotherapy in cancer.

You may retake the test as many times as necessary to pass. To complete the test process and receive your certificate of completion, you must complete a brief survey about the course material and process. After completing the evaluation, you may immediately print your CE certificate of completion or save a pdf of it for your records. You may also request a copy to be sent to you by mail. Certificates will reflect the time and date the user passes the test (Eastern Time, U.S.). In the event of loss, there is no charge for a replacement copy of a CE certificate.
