Although Parkinson’s disease has been recognized for almost two centuries, awareness has dramatically increased with its acknowledgement by public personalities, such as actor Michael J. Fox and boxer Mohammed Ali. And, reports about Parkinson’s disease and its treatment are now featured in lay publications and on television. Because the greatest risk factor is increasing age, the prevalence of Parkinson’s disease is expected to rise as the elderly population grows. However, 4% to 6 % of Parkinson’s disease cases are young-onset — people under the age of 40. Healthcare professionals can expect to encounter patients with Parkinson’s disease in settings throughout the healthcare system and should be aware of the complexities of this chronic, neurodegenerative disorder.

The goal of this program is to update knowledge about Parkinson’s disease. After you study the information presented here, you will be able to —

  • Identify primary and secondary symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.
  • Relate intervention strategies for treatment of early and advanced Parkinson’s disease.
  • Describe future developments for treatment of Parkinson’s disease.
